An air-source heat pump absorbs heat from the outdoor air in winter and rejects heat into outdoor air in summer. One advantage of a heat pump is that it provides both heating and cooling capabilities in one unit. Electric heat pumps are usually supplemented with a backup system, such as radiant floor heaters or baseboard units, in case of extended periods of extremely low ambient temperatures.
